Easy Pain Au Chocolat

A couple of months ago I read the book, appropriately titled, How to Bake a Perfect Life. Very fitting for a baker like me to read. It was a very easy read and great book about a single mother who owns a bakery and is looking after her step-grandaughter. It’s full of stories and, of course, food!

But, before I read the book and even while reading it, I thought you pronounced the French pastry, Pain Au Chocolat, like it’s spelled.

I took Spanish in high school and college…no French here!

Pain….torcher by chocolate? What?!?!

Then, I looked it up. This is how it’s pronounced. And I feel damn smart and snooty saying it that way now. ;-)

I hope you enjoy making these easy French pastries as much as I enjoyed eating them! They are light and there’s a burst of warm melted chocolate in every bite.

Ah, duh…make them. You need to experience this!

Easy Pain Au Chocolat

adapted from How to Bake a Perfect Life: A Novel

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 12 ounces bittersweet chocolate (chips work fine)
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water
  • sugar in the raw for dusting

How-To

  1. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Cut each sheet of pastry into 12 squares.
  3. Then sprinkle 1/2 ounce of chocolate (a few chips) on each square and roll up tightly around the chocolate.
  4. Place on the baking sheet, seam down. Cover with plastic and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  5. Remove pastries from the fridge.
  6. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  7. Brush the tops of the pastries with the egg glaze and dust lightly with sugar and bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown and they have risen.
  8. Let the cool just a bit and enjoy!

  4. Did I jump for joy when I saw this recipe? …yeah, maybe. I’ll admit it. :)

    I visited Paris while I was abroad in college and ate these for breakfast EVERY morning. And sometimes for a snack too. It’s Europe; they do that there! Totally legitimate!

  7. mmm, i love pain au chocolat. i’ve never tried making them (because our local bakery is in walking distance + has a great version) but i think i might have to give ‘em a try!

    These are perfect for our next family breakfast! We never ever have breakfast together though in this family, all doing our own things in the weekends and on working days everybody wakes up at another time. Then I’ll just make them for friends, wrap them and bring them to school :)
