Let’s talk sweet peas! Peas are my personal favorite green vegetable. I can’t say the same for Liam, but he certainly knows how to take them down!
First off, when you’re making sweet pea baby food, I would suggest just buying a bag of frozen organic sweet peas from your grocery store. I don’t think I’ve ever seen fresh peas in my life. If you have fresh ones, feel free to use those. Lucky!
What you’ll need to do is bring some water to a boil under a steamer basket in a large pot. Pour your frozen sweet peas into the steamer basket and steam them until very tender. To test, just take a few peas out of the pot and taste to make sure they burst in your mouth and are very soft when you chew them.
Once the peas are finished cooking, strain the peas in a colander, making sure to collect the cooking water that was in the pot into a separate boil. You’ll use this excess liquid to thin out the baby food.
Place the strained peas in your blender, food processor, baby bullet, magic bullet or other device that will purée the peas with enough water to make the baby food thin. I used 1 cup of the cooking water, but that amount will vary depending on how many peas you cook.
Blend until completely puréed and you reach the correct consistency.
Now for the fun part! You can either let the baby food cool enough to feed your baby now or you can freeze it for later. Either way, I want to introduce you to a new tool in my baby food storage:
The Little Green Pouch!
The Little Green Pouch is a reusable baby food pouch that is BPA free, Phthalate free, dishwasher safe, and freezer safe! As an added bonus, my screw-on spoons for the pouches of baby food that you buy at the grocery fit on it too!
Liam loves to eat from it. I don’t even have to dirty a bowl or spoon. It’s also big enough for him to hold it and eat himself!
There’s even a nice little spot to write his name on it so we can distinguish who’s is whose!
They thought of everything!
The part that I love most, is that it’s dishwasher safe. How much easier can you get as a busy mom?
Well, I’ll let you be the judge. I’m pretty sure the verdict of the peas is a good one. And please tell me that Liam isn’t the only one who goes crazy when I wipe his face after he eats?!? Oowee, I may as well stick him in a bath tub…at least he enjoys a good bath!
Back to the peas…
Spoon the purée you want to save for later into ice cube containers, tap on the counter to get the air bubbles out and freeze for 3 hours or until solid. If you have a Little Green Pouch, you can also spoon some food in that and freeze it in the pouch. Easy peasy!
Once the cubes of food are frozen, just remove them from the tray and put into a freezer safe bag, label, and use within three months of making them.
Each cube is approximately 1 ounce of food.
Yep, that’s one happy baby…
…until I wipe his mouth.
Now, it’s time for you to have a chance to win a Little Green Pouch 4 pack of your own!
