Strawberry Pie

Soooo, I cried a lot this past weekend. No, not because of the crazy pregnancy hormones, or because I just want to meet this baby. Okay, some of it was that…

I dropped my beloved camera…on the concrete.

The body of the 7D seems to be fine, but the 50mm f/1.4 lens, is acting up. My husband took it apart twice to try to fix it, but the auto focus just isn’t working right, and the manual focus still has some issues when turning the focus ring.

It was midway through this photo shoot that it happened. So, some of these photos were taken with the 7D and some with my iPhone 4S.

Can you tell which photos were taken with my iPhone and which was with the Canon 7D?

Well, besides the instagramed photo. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, despite the awful weekend, this pie certainly cheered me up. I had been wanting to make it all week and was so thankful that I finally made it.

Don’t yell at me, I used store-bought pie crust because standing in the kitchen these days is killer. My feet hate me after I bake….but my taste buds love me! πŸ˜€

So, you should make this pie, but never ever everΒ drop your camera.

We’re considering the 50mm f/1.2 L lens. Anyone have it? Recommend it? Not worth the money?

Strawberry Pie

adapted from Sing For Your Supper

Ingredients

  • 9″ pie crust (store bought or whole wheat)
  • 1 1/2 – 2 pounds fresh strawberries
  • 1/2 of a lemon, for fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 3/4 teaspoon corn starch
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 package unflavored powdered gelatin

How-To

  1. Pre-bake your pie crust until light golden brown. Set aside to cool.
  2. Slice 3 cups of the strawberries and then crush them with a fork.
  3. In a medium sauce pan, over medium heat, stir the crushed strawberries, lemon juice, corn starch, and sugar together. Let it simmer for about 7 minutes until it thickens, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from the heat and in a small bowl, combine the water and gelatin. Stir the softened gelatin into the warm strawberry mixture.
  5. Pour the strawberry mixture into your baked pie crust.
  6. Halve or quarter the remaining strawberries and decorate the top with them.
  7. Allow the pie to chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours until set.

  1. This is a wonderful, yet simple, recipe that I can’t wait to try. The filling looks so rich! And I’m so sorry about your camera…those types of accidents are so gut-wrenching. I feel for you!!

  2. Oooooh – my stomach dropped when I read about your camera. So, so sorry! Glad that the body is ok, but good luck lens shopping. I have heard great things about the 50/1.2 btw…

But this pie looks absolutely amazing! I LOVE strawberry pie. And my friends know that I’m the first to turn to storebought crust in a pinch. πŸ™‚ Beautiful!

  3. Love the shape of your pie, the swirled crust. sorry you dropped your camera πŸ™ that would’ve totally messed up my weekend too. But those phone pics aren’t half bad. Hope we get to meet your baby soon.

  4. I hope hope hope your camera is ok… at least it wasn’t a super expensive lens. It still stinks though πŸ™ I guess it’s time to upgrade! If you get the 1.2, let me know…I have been obsessing about it!

  5. The 50mm 1.2 is fabulous in every way and worth the money but…..the 1.4 does a great job as well and easier on the bank account.

  6. Oh no. You and your poor camera. πŸ™ I hope it turns out okay. I’m the clumsiest person ever and I’m terrified of knocking it over. I even take it off the tripod if I leave the room to go get something from the kitchen. And after seeing that flower picture on Instagram, I don’t think it’s possible to tell the pictures apart.

I once dropped my point and shoot in the sand at the beach and it wouldn’t work for a while because of all the sand, but a few hours later, it was magically working. I hope that the magic fixing camera fairy comes to your place tonight. πŸ™‚

The pie looks fantastic! I’m happy it was there to comfort you.

  7. That is the worst feeling in the world. I couple weeks ago I pulled my camera down off the edge of the couch…everything seems fine…but oh did my stomach drop!!! Hopefully this yummy pie was able to distract you from the camera for a while.

  8. My heart just dropped when I read about your camera. I’m so sorry! I hope everything works out okay.

As for the pie, my goodness, it is by far the most prettiest pie I have ever seen! I will have to make this soon, especially because my local grocery store is selling strawberries for $1 per pound!

    1. I have two of these and plan on getting more. They are great for pies pretty to look at, and easy to pick up in the oven. You have a big fan, here. one can never have too many pie plates, aprons, or good recipes! PJ

  9. Oh no! So sorry to hear about your lens. I’ve been wanting to buy myself a new lens but I’m so scared of getting it and then having something like that happen to it, especially with two crazy toddlers running around. Gorgeous pie – I’ve wanted to try a fresh strawberry pie for a while and I love how simple this one is!

  10. This pie looks and sounds amazing. I make a similar pie but with Strawberry gelatin and a graham cracker crust. I must give yours a try soon!

  11. Aside from the one of you holding the strawberry, I never would have guessed that any of these were taken with an iPhone – they’re gorgeous! I’ve dropped my camera with the 50 mm lens attached too (twice actually!). Hope yours is ok πŸ™‚

  12. Oh no! Your poor camera πŸ™ I’ll try to take a queue from this and always use my strap, just in case. Eek. What a gorgeous ruffled crust and dish! I don’t blame you at all for using pre made. Not One Bit!

  13. I’m sorry about your camera lens…that’s one of my greatest fears but I’m glad you ended up purchasing the 50mm f/1.2..you’re going to love it. this pie has such a great presentation in these pictures..i really couldn’t tell which were the iphone and which were the camera!! great job πŸ™‚

  14. I really hope you can fix your lens! I’ve only dropped my camera once and it was on concrete too but it only has a few scratches, I almost had a heart attack it’s one of the worst feelings ever but I bet that this pie made you feel a lot better πŸ˜‰
