Oh, where do I begin.
Chocolate shell is a gift from God, especially Dark Chocolate Shell.
I never in a million years thought you could actually make this at home. I thought it was the kind of preservative and chemical filled food product that could only be manufactured. You know, like cheese puffs and diet coke. ๐
I’m so thankful that it’s something that I can save money on and feel better about eating. If only I could take back the yearsย of eating magic shell for years of eating this homemade stuff!
I highly recommend it and I’m sure it’d be a great project with kids!
Oh, and I noticed that the coconut flavor has a lot to do with the brand of coconut oil you use. I used one brand and you couldn’t taste even the slightest hint of coconut in it, but used a different brand the next time and it was very coconut-y. Just FYI. ๐ Enjoy!

Servings: 1 cup of magic shell
Oh my goodness – I adore Magic Shell!!! (Ok, probably a little more than I should admit!)
I had noooo idea you could make this at home. This looks like so much fun! ๐
I just made some of this over the weekend with peanut butter, soooo yummy! So glad you posted this recipe so I can make it in bulk ๐
Did you add the peanut butter in place of the coconut oil (I’m assuming)? How much did you use?
Funny, I made exactly this at the weekend! It’s so good isn’t it? Although I have to say that you are a much better drizzler than I am…
Magic Shell…..is MAGIC!! And I just so happen to have all these ingredients on hand!!!
I wonder if there is something you could use other than coconut oil to get the texture… looks like so much fun to make and eat!
Looks delicious!! So.. which brand did you try that had the LEAST coconut-y flavor? Just curious as coconut oil is NOT cheap here.. and I’d like to choose one that’s already been taste tested. ๐
Thanks!
I’m almost positive that it was Spectrum that was less coconuty. The Earthfare brand definitely has a hint of coconut. Hope that helps! ๐
spectrum has two kinds. virgin and not. The virgin one is very coconuty. I think its had a pinkish or green sticker. the orange labeled one is unscented.
Good to know! Thank you Liz! ๐
If you get the expeller pressed coconut oil it doesn’t have any flavor at all. I know tropicaltraditions.com sells it.
I love making my own magic shell!! Need anything possible to beat the heat this week!
That looks awfully yummy and now I want ice cream! Wah.
We only have refined coconut oil here, but I’ve read that refined coconut oil has no coconut taste but unrefined coconut oil does. Or did you use unrefined / refined both times? Just an idea. ๐
You are so right! I never knew there was a difference! I used the refined the first time. ๐ Thanks for pointing that out!
Just wanted to clarify if you use refined or unrefined coconut oil? Is there a difference in the results?
Great question. When you use unrefined coconut oil, there will be a slight hint of coconut flavor in the magic shell. However, if you use refined coconut oil, there will be no coconut flavor. Purely chocolate flavor. The results are the same either way, just a flavor difference. Enjoy!
So fun. I cannot believe it’s this easy to make at home!
I think Im a little (or a lot) out of the loop… I dont know what a magic shell is…. but all I have to say is this looks amazing! Who doesnt love ice cream with a lot of chocolate on top??? I love it, and all for it, even though I dont know what it is ๐
It’s a liquid chocolate that hardens when it gets cold on top of the ice cream. It’s amazing. You should give it a try! ๐
Oh wow, I am so making this and putting on my home made coconut ice cream ๐ Super easy to put together. I will have to hide this for sure though. My husband will literally drink this!!
Caroline, I just tried this and it is SO COOL!!! I couldn’t believe it actually hardened! Great excuse to finally use that TJ’s coconut oil. What else do you use coconut oil for? I’d love to use it more often but it’s too coconutty for savory foods.
I use it as a butter substitute! Try it next time you use butter in a baked recipe! ๐ I’m glad you liked it though! ๐
Can you use something instead of coconut oil?
This sounds awesome but I have a coconut allergy. Would other oils work and not have a weird taste?
Yes, actually you can just use 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil instead of coconut oil. ๐ Here’s a more detailed description from Picky Palate. Enjoy!
Put this on some strawberries, popped those puppies in the freezer for like 3 minutes and walah. so yum! thx
I do food gift baskets for my family. Do u think I could
Can this?
Of course! This would be a great gift! ๐
very cool! i look forward to trying this!
.. tips for those of us without a microwave??
Hey Dawna, I would suggest using a double boiler and melt the chocolate and coconut oil. ๐ Happy melting!
omg it WORKED! and it’s DELICIOUS! thank you so much for this… currently snacking on my greek yogurt/honey/strawberry popsicle with chocolate shell ๐ so happy.
Yay! That stuff is awesome! ๐ So glad you liked it Sarah!
Made this tonight. Everyone loved it! Thanks so much.
I’m so glad! That stuff is so delicious!
Does the magic shell solidify at room temp? i know coconut oil does so just thinking how far ahead you can make this and will it last? thanks!
It does get solid after a while depending on how cool your house is. Whenever it gets hard, just pop it in the microwave or in a pot of hot water to melt it back down! ๐ Enjoy!
could i use unsweeten black chocolate with a natural sugar ex:maple syrup or agave instead…would it work ?
thank you
I’m not sure if that would work or not. If you give it a try, I’d love to know! Sounds delicious! ๐
The benefits of coconut oil are destroyed by heat. So, if you’re wanting to preserve those, I’d suggest melting the chocolate (not too hot) then adding the coconut oil.
Lou Anna Brand Coconut oil has no coconut taste. I use this oil for most of my general cooking. This turned out great! Thanks for sharing!
Good call Tara! Thanks for the tip! Also, I learned that refined coconut oil doesn’t have a coconut taste, whereas unrefined has that coconut flavor. ๐
can this be used to dip strawberries or cherries? how about drizzling on cup cakes our came?
As long as your strawberries, cherries or cupcakes are cold. Otherwise, the magic shell will not harden. At room temperature it is a liquid. ๐ Happy dipping!
I made this last night. So yummy! I then stored it in an air tight container in my pantry. This morning it was no longer liquid. ๐ any ideas? Does this happen to any one else? If this is going to be the case I might as well just melt regular chocolate and pour on top when I want ice cream or chocolate covered strawberry Popsicles. Also delicious by the way. ๐ thanks for your help! Amber
Well, it all has to do with how hot/cold your room temperature is. It becomes a liquid at 75 degrees F or above, but if your room temperature is any lower than that, it will turn it to a solid. Living in the south, my homemade magic shell always stays liquid in the summertime, but in the winter turns sold at room temperature. If it turns to a solid, simply pop it in the microwave for a few seconds at a time or in a pot with a small amount of water around the jar to warm it up, therefore liquifying it. I hope that helps! I’m so glad you like it!
Thanks for your reply! That makes sence. I’m on the central coast of
California warm days of 75-80 on a nice day and cool nights. No wonder its
not liquid! ๐ thanks for your help.
I love this idea, however I don’t believe in microwaves. Is it possible to make on the stove by chance?
Great question Ruby. You can certainly make it over a double boiler instead of the microwave. Enjoy!
How long can you keep this in your pantry ? Sounds delicious!
Mine didn’t last very long since it was so good, but I would think it would stay good up to the expiration date of either the chocolate or the coconut oil. ๐
Oh I so love this. I’ve been melting nutella to make my magic shell but this is better as my.child cannot take milk. If I use dark chocolate, would it work?
Dark chocolate would totally work. If you want it a bit more sweet to counterbalance the darkness of the chocolate, you can always add a little bit of sugar, too. Enjoy!
Thank you so much for the recipe I absolutely love it! I’m totally addicted to it now! Im a mum of 4 and always looking new things to keep the kids interested in food!finding your recipe is God sent especially Now that summer is just around the corner!!! Thank you so much for sharing:) xx
Yay! We love that recipe, too. ๐ Enjoy!
This looks fabulous and easy too.. i wanna try this for sure..
