Back in May I taught my first food photography class to some local photographers and bloggers in Columbia, SC. When April first contact me to see if I would be interested in teaching, I was very nervous, but decided to give it a go. I’m glad I did because it was a good chance for me to get back to the basics of food photography and provide a good challenge for impromptu food styling!
I didn’t really know what we’d be photographing until I got to the class (which was held at Charleston Cooks!). It was so fun to work as a team and make the food look as delicious as it tasted!
First up, we have Maurice’s BBQ:
ISO 250 82mm f/4.0 1/100s
Kale Salad from Whole Foods:
ISO 320 75mm f/4.0 1/60s
116 State Street’s Dolmas on top of a Whole Foods Quinoa:
ISO 320 105mm f/4.5 1/80s
Lemonade from Whole Foods showing slow shutter speed:
ISO 100 75mm f/16 1/4s
Lemonade again, showing back lighting:
ISO 320 97mm f/4.5 1/80s
Two Brother’s Jerky…surprisingly hard to style:
ISO 320 90mm f/4.0 1/60s
Cookies from Ally and Eloise:

Thank you to the gals that attended!
So, to you I ask, which dish looks most delicious?
Oh, and just to keep you guys updated on the happenings around here, I’m headed to BlogHer Food 2013 this morning. I have a 6:45am flight to Austin! 🙂 See ya next week!
Wow! Always love your photos!
These look awesome! Some of SC’s best foods there! Hope you have a blast in Austin! I look forward to seeing your recap of the event.
Thanks Taylor! I was so nervous to teach the class, but once I got in there I was in a groove and had a blast! 🙂 And yes, I had a great time in Austin. Recap to come! 🙂
I’m a sucker for pimento cheese, so I was drawn to that one first. But, I also love the backlit lemonade and the cookies.
Oh, me too. Pimento cheese is just hard to beat! 🙂 The backlit drinks always look so delicious. No glare on the glass that way! Yay!
That pimento cheese looks killer, and I love both shots of the lemonade! I need you to teach me all you know! 😉 Why dont you live closer to me?!
I would LOVE to…both live closer to you and teach you everything I know!!! But shoot, you could teach ME a thing or two! I always love your photos. 🙂
Haha whaaaaaaa??? You are the sweetest! I feel like I do “faux”-tography; it’s pure luck if my pictures are good! But thank you so much!! I’m so glad to hear I have a fan! 😀 I really wish we lived closer too! It would be way too much fun and I know our men would get along well too!! 😀
Love the lemonade pictures!
Thanks Nessa! I need to do more drink recipes, they’re so fun to shoot! 🙂
lovely shots 🙂 have fun in Austin
Thank you! 🙂
Awesome post! I bought a 5 in 1 reflector today 🙂 Can’t wait to use it!
Oh good! You’re going to love it! 🙂
I never knew you taught photography classes, Caroline! What an awesome experience for you & the students. You turned out some awesome images! Also, it was so nice to meet you and hang out at BlogHer this weekend. Hope you enjoyed Austin!
Thanks Georgia! It was my first time every teaching, but it was a great learning experience for me! It was so nice meeting you! Austin is such a great city. Now, I need to bring my husband to visit and we can all hang out! 🙂
beautiful photos!!!! what a neat experience to teach a class…I so need to take one…I have such poor knowledge with my camera.
Thank you Angela! It was certainly a great way for me to collect my knowledge in one place. You should definitely take a class if you ever get the chance. Such a great way to learn and be able to ask one-on-one questions. 🙂
