Exploring New York City’s The Moderne Hotel near Central Park.
The Moderne was our first stop in New York City. We chose this hotel because of its proximity to Central Park, museums, Times Square, Rockerfeller Center and good food. We literally walked everywhere from the Moderne. It was so convenient!
Let’s talk about the hotel. The Moderne is a small hotel with only 37 rooms. We were in one of the Junior Suites, which came in handy with having a baby in the room with us two adults. It was always quiet and we really didn’t hear any road noise during the night.
The bed was very comfortable after a long day of walking and the bathroom and shower had very lovely finishes and felt plenty big for New York. However, we did notice some small details that needed some attention, like corners of peeling wallpaper and an over used chair. But, overall it felt very clean and safe.
The people behind the desk were kind and seemed to love getting to know the guests and giving out advice. We enjoyed getting to know the manager, David, who also works in the lobby. He was around to answer any questions and make our stay as comfortable as possible. He also hailed our taxi for us! There was also a doorman who was there to get us the door most of the time.
Our only real squabble was what we like to call the crib debacle. When I booked our room, I made a note that we would be needing a crib for Hayden. When we checked into the hotel at noon, we reminded them again that we would be needing it. The management said he would take care of it. As we came back to the Moderne throughout the day, three more times, each time was to check in to see if they crib was ready. We were all exhausted from the day of traveling and sightseeing and just wanted sleep. However, every time we came in, it was something like, “the other hotel has the crib” or “we’re working on it” and finally, “we have to go buy a crib because the one we reserved has extended their night”. So, by 10pm, after walking the streets of New York for hours to buy time before bedtime, we finally gave up and went back to the room. As we were winding down for the night, one of the hotel staff came in and brought us a brand new play yard and mattress. The only thing is, I’m pretty sure they hadn’t the slightest clue what a baby crib should be comprised of, because he left it with the mattress’s loose plastic on and just threw a loose queen size sheet on top. That certainly wasn’t going to fly with my 7 month old and staying alive at night. Luckily, I prepared ahead and brought a pack ‘n play sheet from home and removed the loose plastic from the mattress. It was a little stressful and the management could have done a better job since they knew we were coming, but they came through in the end.
Moving on… the Moderne also has a lovely guest lounge that is a larger space to hang out, work and enjoy complimentary drink and food. When we visited, they provided free coffee and had a breakfast loaf and bowl of fruit in the morning.
Overall, I would definitely stay at the Moderne again. Everyone was kind and it was such a fabulous location! Now, scroll down for more photographs of the hotel!
